A SEASONAL PUBLICATION BY AND FOR HALF MOON BAY RESIDENTS
How can I begin to thank so many absolutely wonderful neighbors who helped me and my family through a really tough ordeal? Losing my husband of 66 years was very sad. My one consolation is that he no longer suffers pain. Though he did not complain, it was obvious he endured a lot. My family, our friends and neighbors all were there when I needed them. They offered rooms, they sent food, they set up the club, and they served food, purchased and served drinks, cleaned up and reached out whenever something was needed. The Mass cards and Sympathy cards were so appreciated. How does one say thank you enough for the delicious dinners, soups, chowder, sandwich trays, breakfast trays and desserts that arrived at out condo and the club? I am overwhelmed, and all I can think is: Thank God we moved here and my husband was determined to come here this year when we did, to get out of the cold. I think he knew you would all help me get through everything and survive his loss. May God Bless all of you. Gloria McCarthy and Family.
MOONBEAMS

It’s hard to publish a monthly newsletter. It’s even more difficult
with NO input from the community. I can’t put together the MOONBEAMS, nor can
Bill Hartmann maintain the website, without information from the Social
Committee, the Boards of Directors, or you the residents, telling us what’s
going on in Half Moon Bay. Please help us. If you want to continue receiving
this newsletter, and continue to have a website, we need YOU to provide info to
Bill or Judi Hartmann or me by the first of each month.
We will miss Ed McCarthy. He was a true gentleman who will always have
a special place in our hearts. We will also miss our friend Dan Fetters and his
ready smile. Thanks to JoMarie & Don DuBois and team for the lovely
memorial on his behalf. It’s times like this that remind me of why I love Half
Moon Bay and why I live here. It’s because we care about, and are always ready
to help one another.
In large letters THANK YOU JACK HERNDER AND TEAM for making the
delicious sausage for Super Sausage Sunday. Every year you come through for the
Social Committee. We want you to know how much we appreciate your hard work. We’ve
missed Pat this year. We‘re sending our love to Canada, and saying,
” from your mouth to God’s ears” we had a great day! Pat always says
that it will not rain on her sausage day. She must have been doing her rain
dance. We had good weather and loads of folks came out for this event. This is
a big fund-raiser for us. We appreciate your participation.
JoMarie DuBois hosted the
Super Bowl Sunday party again this year. She is like our very own Energizer
Bunny! Where does she get all of
her energy? It sure has me stumped! The winners of the Super Bowl pool were,
Paula Gutterson, Capt.Jack, and Romano Fusco. Congratulations everyone!
The trip to Hard Rock Casino was a huge success. Thanks to Joan and
Bernie King for getting it organized. I saw lots of happy people boarding the
bus in the morning. Not so sure about the trip back. Guess it depends upon
whether you were a winner or not. In any case it was a fun way to spend the
day.
Unless you’ve slept through the season thus far, you know that, the weather
has not been as warm as most of us would like. For those of you brave enough to
try a dip the pools might feel a little chilly. The pool heaters are working
but with temps in the 30's and 40's it’s really tough to get and keep the water
at swim temperature.
Mid-winter vacation brought lots of visitors and loads of kids to Half
Moon Bay. It was crowded and maybe you couldn’t sit in your favorite chair in
your favorite spot by the pool. To those who were upset by all the activity and
the happy chaos of the children please understand it was only for a week. We
all survived. Everyone seemed to enjoy the music by the pool on Valentine’s
Day. We plan to have music at least two more times before the end of the
season. If you have suggestions for themes please contact me or any other
Social Committee member. We want to have a Movie Night perhaps on Friday’s.
What’s do you think? Let us know.
The first Tea of the season was Monday, February 15th. I had
children visiting so I did not get to attend. I heard that Monica Dellapietra
and Diane Panzica did a wonderful job and it was a huge success. Many thanks to
all the who helped, and to those of you who baked those delicious goodies! Two
more teas coming up so watch your mailbox area for flyers.
Before this is printed, Marino Testa and Carl Zarcone and their, more
than able, group will have put on another successful Italian night. All the
food was cooked by a wonderful group of volunteers including Maria Fusco,
Renata Zullo, Carmella Testa, and Anna and Frank Appice. As usual the evening
was a sell out. It must be that good homemade Italian food. Thank you all for
your hard work. We need to have more events like this.
Next up will be the annual St. Patrick’s Party. JoMarie DuBois and Joan
Maloney are co-chairpersons. If you’d like to help let either know. A few extra
hands help are always welcome.
Speaking of help, Donna Scully has got to win an award for selling the
most HMB apparel ever. Without wonderful volunteers like her this would not be
the happening place it is.
I hear that Bocce is a huge success this year. It’s nice to know that
so many residents are participating.
A few weeks ago we had an impromptu no host cocktail party in the
clubhouse. We played some music brought our own drinks and snacks, danced a
little and had a wonderful time. When it was over we cleaned up after
ourselves. It wasn’t much different than our “clean the fridge “parties at the
end of the season. It was nice to get together, on a rather cool night, with
some of our friends and neighbors. We need to have more of this type of
activities. Be an organizer. Get your friends together. Contact a Master Board
Member, get the okay and enjoy HMB. I don’t know whose idea this was, but it
sure was fun!
Joan Maloney is happy to announce that she and Joe will be welcoming
two more grandchildren to their family this year. Both their oldest and
youngest daughters are expecting. Congratulations Maloneys!!!
Thank you to Gloria McCarthy and Joan Maloney for your contributions to
this month’s MOONBEAMS
Until next time. See you around the pool, specially at the Wednesday
and Sunday BBQ’s Nancy
