2006 SEASON REVIEW
Nancy Hemenway
The social season is just about over. We have had one heck of a busy winter! The weather was not always the greatest for the BBQs, but we did very well. Thanks to all the residents who come out and participated. Anyone remember the day JoMarie was serving hot chocolate? It was cold, but there were residents who did not let us down. The weather wasn't very cooperative the day we had Richie Dee with Reggae music either. I thought that the tent was surely going to end up in the Intracoastal! We have a saying at the BBQ’s, from Pat Hernder's mouth to God’s ear..it daren’t rain on a Pat Hernder organized event! It usually doesn’t! True to form that day was cloudy and dark as heck but it didn't rain until the party was over. We have had great variety at the BBQ’s this season. We've had the usual fare as well as our wonderful sausage, fish, knishes, and once we even had pizza. We also seem to have dessert fairly often, as well. Someone either donates a dessert or someone is celebrating a birthday or anniversary. The Fly Away BBQ was a huge success. A wonderful team of volunteers made it a fun day for everyone. If you don't frequent the BBQ’s you really are missing something.
March was very busy; we had the final Red Hat luncheon at Prime Catch which was just lovely. The Red Hats gave Ann Sceppa a bouquet of flowers as a thank you for all that she has done for the group.
On Wednesday March 8th, Cantus Mercurialis a choir ensemble from the University of Turku, Finland performed a poolside concert sponsored by the FINNS of HMB. They sang most of the afternoon. It was a real treat! Thanks FINNS!
Esther Casey hosted the final Tea of the season with a hat Party and a dessert spread to rival the best of bakeries. The hat contest was great fun, Bob Gutterson, Ann Sceppa, Nancy Hemenway and Renata Fusco were the winners. Esther has resigned as Tea chairperson; she will be missed. Joyce Fishman has graciously offered to coordinate the Tuesday Teas with the help of many ladies. Please give Joyce a hand next season.
The St. Patrick’s Party is always a hit. This year was no exception. Joan Maloney and her gang of volunteers did a wonderful job. The food was excellent, decorations were fabulous, the step dancers and the DooWops made for a very pleasant evening.
Rita Knight, once again, did a great job organizing the casino trip. Everyone who went enjoyed themselves. If you didn’t win any money, at least you had a great day with friends from HMB.
We've had the last Bingo of the season. Thanks to Vincent Zullo for volunteering to call each Wednesday and, Helen Strawson and Wanda Iwaskow for all the years they organized it. If anyone is interested in assisting Bingo for next season, please contact Wanda Iwaskow or a member of the Social Committee.
We received many donations for the April 1st White Elephant Sale. Thanks to all who cleaned out. You helped us to raise a few dollars. We made; $345.00 which will put to good use for future events.

A special thank you to Judi and Bill Hartmann for their donation of time, energy and creative skills in preparing our numerous announcement flyers, the Moon Beam Newsletter, and maintaining the HMB website. They both deserve a great job well done from all the owners of HMB.
We have had so many volunteers this year. We hope that the Social Committee "Thank You Pizza Party" for all volunteers demonstrates in a small way our appreciation. Your contributions are priceless. We are lucky to have such wonderful neighbors. THANK YOU !
While we're on the subject of volunteers. Have you noticed the pool bar recently? Doesn't it look great? Don Dubois, and Sam Matteace did the work. A huge THANK YOU for a great job !
The last BBQ of the season will be Saturday, April 15th. We are having hot dogs and hamburgers and music by the pool. Because this is Easter Saturday there will be lots of guests. Please by courteous and clean up after yourselves
We have set our schedule for next season so if you are planning your return for the Welcome Back Party, it will be on January 13, 2007. Please get back in time for this very popular event. The rest of next season's schedule is on the last page and will be posted on the website.
We would like to thank Andy Marino for his hard work the past two years as President of the Social Committee. He was a pleasure to work with. We hope that he will continue to be a major part of our HMB social season for years to come. We would also like to thank Pat Hernder for her many years of service to the Social Committee. Pat is taking along deserved break from the Social activities at HMB. Well done Pat! We appreciate all that you do. Please don’t take too long of a break!
K-HOV UPDATE
John Sceppa
K-HOV welcomes two new members to it's Board, directors, Bob Meli, and Bob Miller. The Board sends it's appreciation to the owners who donated time and energy to complete several repair and restoration projects throughout the property. The projects included the restoration of broken cement curbs, installation of new outgoing mailboxes at all buildings, and the painting of FPL electrical boxes.
Seventeen small palm trees were recently planted throughout the property. There are 18 more scheduled to be planted by the end of April. Street lighting repairs have been contracted for and work is scheduled to begin by the middle of April.
On April 1st a request for proposal was placed in the 2 major local newspapers and on 4 websites. A bidders conference was held on April 5th. Sealed bids must be submitted to GRS Management by April 25th. Bids must provide costs of labor and materials for roofing using either of two types of material One is barrel cement tile similar to the current roofing material. The other is a "Spanish S" tile style Dur -A-Lock metal material. The Board plans to select the winning bid and award the contract for the roofs in May 2006.The Board has appointed President, Bob Leupp, and Secretary, Bill Hartmann to be the coordinators of this, approximately, 1.5 million dollar, project. Bill and Bob will be working the engineering consulting firm, Hillman Engineering of Ft. Lauderdale, which the Board hired to insure that the project is completed successfully in a timely manner.
The K-HOV Board has recently requested that owners provide keys to their units to be used in their absence during emergency situations. Maintaining keys to each unit is a requirement of K-HOV's official rules and regulations. The purpose of having keys available is to allow Board members to enter unoccupied units to secure, protect and/or repair significant damage resulting from, a hurricane, fire, or any other condition that threatens a particular unit or adjacent units. The Board has a fiduciary responsibility to protect unit(s) as part of the common property on behalf of all unit owners. As of March31, the Board had received keys from about 30 per cent of the owners.
Those of us leaving for our homes in other places are reminded that patios should be completely empty of everything including furniture, plants, and etc. Items left on patios can cause extensive damage to screens, glass doors, and shutters during severe weather.
WE
ARE FAMILY
Gloria McCarthy
If you were wondering what was occurring at the club house on March 4th be enlightened…ED McCARTHY turned 85! His seven children , their spouses, and 6 of his 25 grandchildren, plus in-laws, and friends were celebrating with dessert, Irish coffee, and lots of dancing to music by a DJ!
The evening started with at the Ritz-Carlton, with dinner and speeches by the children. It continued at the club house with help from some wonderful HMB neighbors and a delicious sheet cake from the Ritz Carlton.
The club party began with the HMB "Rockettes" singing , and dancing, a ditty that characterized Ed and set the pace for a very jovial evening.
Ed is well known for the "shiny" HMB telephone directory, produced 5 times from 1992-2003, later with the help of Joe Maloney, Syd Fishman, and Lou and Marie Deridder. His wife wrote a note "A little Bit of Heaven" about HMB and his borther-in-law drew the schematic of the buildings. Ed solicited ads from local businesses. With the income he supplied a gas grill, kept it working for all to use, had cement benches placed on the grounds for people to sit and rest. One, near the big pool, disappeared (???). Excess money was turned over to the Master Board to be used as needed. He volunteered at the local elementary school, sharing some of his war experiences with the children. He became known at the Hypoluxo town hall as "Don Quixote" for his fight against the train whistles at night. He also campaigned, unsuccessfully, for several years to have a fishing pier built, extending from the shoreline, with lights and cleaning stations, at a cost of only $100 per family. He deserved a good party !
A PERSONAL NOTE
Carolyn Palazzolo
As the season winds down and many of us are preparing to head north, start our summer visiting and vacationing, I'd like to express a personal note on the past season at Half Moon Bay.
Our winter season began on a dismal note due to a family illness. Part of our time was spent up north in Minnesota, where we were re-introduced to bone chilling temperatures. After living in Florida for so many years, the weather was a real shocker ! Add to that our distressed state of mind and, you get the picture… A depressing one.
A big part of our being able to get through our difficult time was having HMB to come back to. Not just the palm trees and sunshine, though what a sight after naked branches and snow up north. No, what made it bearable was having our friends to come home to, share some laughs, and resume our routine. Life in a community like ours is never without problems. Just like a family, there will always be some friction. But, for the most part, I believe our community has an unusual sense of comraderie. Most of us, I believe, value a place where you feel you belong to the community, not just live in it.
We are so fortunate to have so many people who give generously of their time, talents, and labor for the benefit of all of our residents. It's this generous spirit, and sense of community that helps make Half Moon Bay a home, and I do appreciate the friends and neighbors who make it so.
RED HATS
Ann Sceppa
I would like to thank the social committee for their donation of $100 to our group. We had our last successful luncheon of the season at Prime Catch . We used the money to reduce the cost for the 28 red hats who attended. Looking forward to a great season next year. Thanks to all who chaired events. Hope you all come back with great ideas for our next season. Thanks to Esther Casey for her Mad Hatter Tea.
BINGO NEWS
Ann Sceppa
Half Moon Bay would like to thank Wanda Iwaskow and Helen Strawson for their 14 years of dedication in chairing our bingo games on Wednesday night. They will be training new chairpersons during the 2007 season. Thanks again Wanda and Helen for a job well done
AARP DRIVE ALIVE
Jack Quirke
The March 10th AARP Driver Safety Program, attended by 33 people, was a success for several reasons. First, the planning began in early January with a broad announcement that invited HMB residents and to indicate their interest. The many responses were clear that we should move forward with AARP. Actually, more people wanted to attend than could be accommodated, so the books were closed at the end of January. Thanks to Marion & Jack Quirke who coordinated this useful project; and, were pleased by the interest shown by the residents.
