February was a busy month, socially speaking. Italian Night was, as always, a huge success with a profit of more than seven hundred dollars. The hard working kitchen crew, Anna and Frank Appice, Maria Fusco, and Renata Zullo, made it a wonderful, delicious evening. Congratulations to Carl Zarcone and his team of volunteers for an outstanding event.
We couldn’t have asked for a better evening for the Valentine Potluck cocktail party. Because the weather was gorgeous, we were able to enjoy the event outside by the pool. About 80 residents and friends attended. We had wonderful food and good music to enjoy. A giant thank you to Bob and Paula Gutterson for providing the fresh strawberries for dessert. Thanks also to Paula for making the chocolate dipped ones.
As always, the BBQ’s continue to be a success with hard work from our kitchen and BBQ crew. We hope to see more new faces attend and volunteer. Every Wednesday and Sunday our crew is busy providing you with a great event. We have new T-shirts and hats for sale, plus some wind shirts. So please support your Social Committee. Let’s see all those new shirts walking about the property. Please remember to say “please” and “thank you” to the hard working volunteers.
Casino Night scheduled for February 28 was cancelled due to lack of volunteers. Based on the success of the Valentine’s cocktail party the Social Committee had a potluck dinner instead. Lucille Zannino and Nancy Hemenway volunteered to chair the event. The party was free but sign-ups were requested in order to insure a good variety and quantity of food. There was plenty of delicious food. However, many who had not signed up came to the party. Eighty-eight residents signed up. Anticipating that a few extra guests might show up, the room was set up for ninety-five. One hundred forty-one attendees were counted. Seating was a nightmare! The Social Committee loves being able to sponsor free events. We know you like them, but without your cooperation we won’t be able to continue to have them. In the future when asked to sign up for an activity please do so.
Eighteen women attended the annual Chico’s fashion show and continental breakfast Sunday, March 8th. It was fun! What’s not to love about shopping? ?
Eileen Meli has stepped in to chair the clubhouse redecoration project. The clubhouse is shaping up nicely thanks to Eileen and Marie Tumminello. Mike Sylvester, Bob Meli, Don DuBois, and Sam Mattece, with direction from Frank Appeci restored the wicker and cane chairs and the barstools. When they finished Marie and Romano Fusco made new seat covers for them. While all of this was going on Clarence Weir put his many talents to work completing the “honeydo’ list. We residents thank all of you for your hard work, and your donations of time and effort in to helping make the Clubhouse the special place it should be. Without you we wouldn’t have these improvements. When you see any of these folks please thank them in person for all their help and good work.
The St. Patrick Party has come and gone. One hundred ten tickets were sold. JoMarie DuBois and Joan Maloney co-chaired this traditionally fun event. This year in addition to the usual corned beef and cabbage dinner and the talented Irish dancers we were thrilled and surprised with an impromptu authentic Irish bagpipe concert by our authentic Irish neighbor Brian Cumisky. What WAS under that kilt Brian??
Spring Fling will be Tuesday, March 31. Posters announcing the particulars will be posted at your mailboxes and in the hallway of the Clubhouse soon. Flo Avesato and Lois Nigro are the chairs. The Flyaway will be Saturday April 4th. The regular BBQ is at noon. A potluck dessert table will follow the BBQ. Music by Jody Pollard is from 1 to 4 PM. Larry Balgro is the chairperson.
JoMarie DuBois would like to start a new resident welcoming committee and is looking for “Welcome Person” volunteers from all buildings. If you are interested please contact her.
Please remember that all proceeds from Social Committee functions are returned to the community in goods or services to help make living at Half Moon Bay nicer. The Social Committee has purchased grills, chairs, tables, umbrellas, and benches. We provide small stipends to help offset expenses for various social groups within the community such as bocce, book club, and water exercise. Without your participation in Social Committee fundraising activities it would be a lot duller around here.
Vinny and Ernestine Massa met Zeke and Lucille Zannino fifty years ago, May 7, 1959, in Miami Beach. Both newlywed couples were on their honeymoons. The Massas are from New York and the Zanninos from Massachusetts. They formed a friendship that continues today. Each has four children and several grandchildren. When I heard this story I thought “How terrific!”. These four people came from different backgrounds and became such good friends that they celebrate most important occasions together as families. For the past fifty years they have met almost every year to spend vacations together and celebrate. Ones hears few stories today about friendships that span so much time. The Massas and the Zanninos will celebrate their fiftieth anniversaries this year in early May. They are going on a Mediterranean cruise together. We wish them well! We are happy to have you as neighbors and friends. There is a saying “You have to be a good friend to have a good friend”. Obviously these four have lived that.
Congratulations to Dick Roney on his election to Hypoluxo Town Council.
Mel Casey presented an interesting lecture series on Alaska. Hope you got to see it. Thanks Mel.
This month Ed McCarthy was eighty-eight. Andy Marino is eighty, and Jack Hernder seventy. Happy Birthday and many more to all of you! Having a birthday? Let us know.
The season is winding down. April is fast approaching. We will probably publish one more edition of MOONBEAMS before everyone heads home. Check the website at www.hmb-hypoluxo.com if you have questions regarding next season’s planned activities.
