MOONBEAMS
A SEASONAL PUBLICATION BY AND FOR HALF MOON BAY RESIDENTS
FEBRUARY 2005
CAROLYN’S CORNER
Carolyn Palazzolo
We hope that you enjoyed the first edition of the new MOONBEAMS. As the season gets into full swing it’s fun to read about the many activities planned for Half Moon Bay.
The Welcome Back Party was an opportunity to meet new neighbors and to get together with old friends over delicious food and drink. We welcome back the doo-wops. They are great fun! Speaking of food and fun, you can always tell when the poolside BBQs are going on. The mouthwatering aromas draw even non-sunbathers to the pool area. In addition to the usual fare, we were treated to the famous Hernder Family homemade sausage on Super Bowl Sunday. It’s always a favorite … and why not? It is the best. These social events, like all others, are made possible by the efforts of volunteers, the heart of our community. Join us. It’s not a lifetime commitment, and it is fun.
Interested in helping out our military men and women who are deployed around the world? There is a web site that provides access information about donating items, writing letters, and volunteer opportunities of all types. The site address is www.forgottensoldiers.org . This site makes it very easy to show our gratitude for the sacrifices made by our military around the world
NOTES FROM NANCY
Nancy Hemenway
The Season has started. The Welcome Back Party on January 16 th was a tremendous success. Because of the hard work of the Social Committee a fun evening was had by all. A big “THANK YOU” to the Sceppas, Melis, Marinos, Martins, and Hemenways, for chairing the event. Thanks also to Mike Nathanson and Andrea Reed for donating the music for the evening. We danced to the doo-wops, and enjoyed the food. It was all courtesy of those of you who attend and support our BBQs and dinners. We are pleased to see so many new faces and to greet old friends at the first events of the season. We hope you will all continue to support our events.
The BBQs are already a huge success. Every Wednesday and Sunday a hard-working crew cooks for and serves you, our neighbors and friends. Please remember to be courteous, we are all volunteers. We serve the usual: hot dogs, hamburgers, and chicken, plus anything else our team chefs come up with. Most BBQ days find Sam Matteace and Bob Gutterson manning the grill with great patience. They are skilled at cooking items just right. Pat Hernder, who manages the rest of the work and her team of volunteers always need help. Set-up is around 11 am, and clean up is around 2PM. Many hands make light work. If you want the BBQ’s to continue every Wednesday and Sunday please consider lending a hand. The BBQ’s are one of our main fundraisers that help us sponsor many community events. We always look forward to the Hernder Sausage events. There is nothing like them anywhere. Jack Hernder and his kitchen crew make the sausage that we all enjoy. Pat Hernder and her team help make it a success.
We have some interesting upcoming events. Joan Maloney is chairperson for Irish night March 19 th . Rita Knight is chairperson of the Hard Rock Casino trip March 17 th . Posters and information are up on the bulletin boards around the buildings, and also on the web site www.hmb-hypoluxo.com .
The golf outing is scheduled for February 24 th . The sign up sheets are in the hallway of the clubhouse. Tom Hemenway, Andy Marino, and Bob Meli are Chairpersons.
At our recent Social Committee meeting, Jean Baurley suggested a possible New Years Eve event for next year, with music and a desert table. Anyone interested in chairing this? What do you think? Would you be interested? Contact Jean for questions or to volunteer.
WHAT IS THE SOCIAL COMMITTEE
Pat Foreman
The Social committee is a group of Half Moon Bay resident volunteers who plan and promote social activities for the community.
Who can join the Social Committee? Any resident willing to donate a little time and effort to committee projects may join the Social Committee.
How do I join the Social Committee? Simply attend a Social Committee meeting. Times and dates are posted on the bulletin boards, or you can contact any Social committee member.
Why should I join the Social Committee? Joining the Social Committee is a great way to make new friends and to become involved in your community.
What does the Social Community do for Half Moon Bay? Every year, the Social Committee sponsors a clubhouse holiday decorating party and a Welcome back party. It also subsidizes bingo, cards, golf and other ongoing activities .
How does the Social Committee raise money? The chief fundraisers are the popular biweekly BBQs. This project is maintained by a small group of residents. Help is always appreciated. Sign up for a given Wednesday or Sunday, and make the load lighter for this hard working group.
What does the Social Committee do with the money it raises?
The Social Committee is a non-profit organization. All profits are returned to benefit residents in some form. In addition to the ongoing activities mentioned above it has donated many items to the community. The committee has provided the big screen TV, stereo, and disco lighting in the club house main room as well as a new refrigerator and stove in the kitchen. Outside there’s the ice maker, two table/chair, and umbrella sets, two-gas grills for residents to use, and a Ping-Pong table pool side. They have also purchased water fountains and benches for the tennis courts
These are just some of the major items that I can recall, there are numerous small items which I can't recall. I believe that the committee benefit’s all residents. I hope this article will convince you to become an active member.
TENNIS TOURNAMENT
Albert Eisenberg
The 6 th annual Bill Lochten Memorial doubles tennis tournament was held on Tuesday, January 25, 2005. Tony Panzica, tournament newcomer, grabbed the top prize. Runner-up prizes were presented to veteran participants Joe Maloney, Sandra Rhylander and Peter Rhylander. Post-game banquet and award ceremony took place at the clubhouse.
Other participants, on this sunny, blue-sky day, were Lou DeRidder, Joan Maloney, Norman Layer, Paul Fenelon, Joe Sleeper, Michel Benoit, Jack Hernder and chairman Al Eisenberg. Jack Sutter, tournament founder, was scorekeeper. Elsa Layer was assistant scorekeeper.
Awards were donated by the following tournament sponsors: Nathanson Chiropractic, Mark’s Center Court Tennis, New York Style Restaurant and Pizza, Karen Fragola Massage, and Sal’s Italian Restaurant.
THE RED HATS
Ann Sceppa
The first Red Hat outing Thursday January 27th was a trip to the Ann Norton Sculpture Garden in West Palm Beach. After that we had lunch at Bellagio in City Place. We were ten women all dressed in purple and red outfits topped off with – what else – Red Hats.
Getting there was half the fun. The third car in our caravan got lost at a red light, but finally ended up at the right museum. It was interesting. We got to meet with the featured artist of the current exhibit, a sculptor and painter. She had never seen a Red Hat group. She took our picture. The lunch at City Place was delicious. We all made it safely back to Half Moon Bay.
Thanks to Joyce Fishman for arranging this great tour. Our next excursion scheduled for February 18 th will be the “Diva Duck” tour of West Palm Beach and lunch at BrewZZi’s City Place. Come join us !
TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Nancy Hemenway
The Social Committee would like to extend our gratitude to the Master Association Board of Directors for their generous donation toward Christmas decorations for the common areas of the property. Most of our decorations are very old and in need of replacement, your generosity is greatly appreciated.
NEWS FLASH
John Sceppa
Have you seen the new bar area in the clubhouse? Lucky for us Half Moon Bay has some very talented residents. Thanks to cousins, Sam Matteace and Frank Appice for contributing their time, energy, and skills to this remodeling. Further thanks to Vincent Zullo for his expert repair of the bar’s lighting system, and his work with Maria Fusco in the precise cutting of the floor and wall tiles. Thanks too to Gene Dellapietra, and Romano Fusco and the many other volunteers who assisted in the project by removing the old lights, floor tile, and cabinets and helped with clean up.
This team certainly knows how to get a job done and done well ! The Master Board, on behalf of all Half Moon Bay unit owners, extends sincere thanks! You did an awesome job and we are all grateful. We’re fortunate to have you as our neighbors.
MESSAGE FROM THE MASTER BOARD
John Sceppa
The Master Association wishes to refrain from promulgating more and more rules. However, some activities have been called to our attention requesting action. Please observe the following common sense rules:
DO NOT FEED THE BIRDS in and around Half Moon Bay. This reduces the bird’s ability to fend for itself in the wild and it attracts trash birds.
When riding bicycle on paths grant right away to pedestrians and do not speed. If you overtake a pedestrian do not expect the pedestrian to step aside. You move out of the way. When on the roadway the same rules apply as if you were an auto.
When walking on roadways do not walk three abreast and do grant the right of way to autos. We do not want an accident.
WHAT’S NEW
HALF MOON BAY WEB SITE
Webmaster
Half Moon Bay now has its own Webster: www.hmb-hypoluxo.com . The site is funded by the Master Association, and is maintained locally by volunteers.
Because it's so new, it's rather sparse but does have some useful and interesting information. The site has official information for each of the three condominium associations (contacts, rules etc.), information about upcoming events, and even MOONBEAMS has a place on the web. You'll be able to view or download the current and past issues from the comfort of your own data-processing center. While you're away, you'll be able to see what's happening at Half Moon Bay. The site has e-mail links to the board members and management staff.
We'd like to have more content on the site. Please send relevant content in electronic format to webmaster@hmb-hypoluxo.com for consideration. We can accept, edit, modify, and place on the web most of the standard text and graphic formats (e.g. Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, JPG, BMP).
Want an alias e-mail address of your own? We can assign you one that will have the same form as the "webmaster" e-mail address above. Just send us e-mail at webmaster@hmb-hypoluxo.com and we'll set one up for you.
WHAT’S NEXT
AARP 55 ALIVE
Jack Quirke
HEADS UP: In mid March you will be offered an opportunity to receive a three year discount on your existing auto insurance premiums, by attending two AARP 55 ALIVE classes. Watch the bulletin boards for details.
BAREFOOT GOURMET

Testa’s Restaurant
221 Royal Poinciana Way
Palm Beach 561-832-0992
Don’t let the address scare you off. You can drive North on 95 to Okeechobee Boulevard East, over the bridge and turn north. However, the more “civilized” route is to go North on Federal Highway to Ocean Avenue in Lantern across the bridge to Manalapan. Then drive North on A1A until you pass the Palm Beach Breakers Hotel. Then turn left onto Royal Poinciana Way. Although Testa’s serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, your critic strongly suggests lunch. To sit outside, view the area, and watch the world go by, is alone worth the drive.
Testa’s has been serving quality food since 1921. You’ll have over 40 entrees from which to select, including 15 appetizers. Your critic chose their famous “Best of the Beaches” burger. It was just shy of one half pound of fresh beef served with French fried potatoes, cole slaw, lettuce, tomato, and onions. It was cooked to order at only $7.25. You can have your choice of 6 optional toppings for an extra 95 cents each. In a phrase: try it…you’ll love it ! My companion had the Testa’s chicken salad, lightly tossed in mayonnaise with fresh fruit salad for $9.50. Not only was it delicious, it was large enough to have the courteous and helpful staff package almost half of it for take home. Interested? Check out their web site at www.TestasRestaurants.com
