MOONBEAMS

A SEASONAL PUBLICATION BY AND FOR HALF MOON BAY RESIDENTS

FEBRUARY 2009

As the season progresses, I want to thank the many volunteers who help make our Social Committee events successful.

If attendance numbers matter, the Welcome Back Party was a huge success. We counted at least 130 attendees. Larry Balgro was an outstanding first-time host with very little assistance from yours truly. The DJ did a wonderful job. He got everyone into the welcoming spirit of the evening. Of course, that wasn’t a difficult job. I know that we were happy to see one another again after being separated for months. The Welcome Back Party is the time when old friendships are renewed and new friendships begin. Thanks to worker bees Maloneys, Guttersons, Hartmanns, Hemenways, DuBois, Matteces, Weirs, and their friends who helped with party set up and clean up.

Thank goodness JoMarie and Don DuBois are in charge of the BBQ’s again this year! They have gathered a wonderful group of volunteers who can be counted upon to pitch in when needed. The group includes our “chefs” Bob and Sam who, when not cooking, are selling ice cream. Although Ash Wednesday is February 25th, there’s no reason to skip BBQ’s during Lent. We will have fish sandwiches available just for you. We appreciate your participation in the BBQ’s. They are what enable the Social Committee to sponsor free events and to subsidize other activities.

This year we will be selling newly designed Half Moon Bay T-shirts. They are royal blue with white letters and white with dark blue letters. They will be available in men’s and women’s styles.  Exact price and size information will be available at the Social Committee table at Wednesday and Sunday BBQ’s.

At the last meeting the Social Committee decided to purchase a music system in order to play music by the pool on BBQ days. Super Sausage Sunday we played a little bit of something for everyone. The music ranged from Swing, and the 50’s, to Rod Stewart. Hope you enjoyed it. If you would like to bring some of your favorites to play, please do.  Lots of residents liked the music. The volunteers seem to have had a little livelier step with the music playing. There have been some complaints about the noise from some neighbors. We are now considering how often we should play music at the BBQ’s.

Jack Hernder and a group of dedicated guys made a lot of sausage for Super Sausage Sunday. It was, as always, delicious as evidenced by the over 115 sandwiches sold. Super Bowl Sunday Night JoMarie and a group of volunteers had a great Super Bowl Party in the clubhouse. About 35 residents attended.

Once again Andy Marino ran the football  pool. As in years past all had a good time at the party. Thanks to all the volunteers that made it happen. Many hands lighten the load.

The Italian Dinner Dance is February 7th. Cocktails are at 6 PM. Dinner is at 7 PM. This year again our wonderful neighbors will be the chefs. We say BRAVO, well done and thank you to Frank Appeci and his helpers

The usual activities: book club, golf, water aerobics, tennis, bocce, mahjong, bridge, and bingo are in full swing. Or you can just hang out at the pool. The pool and clubhouse are the centers of most activity here at Half Moon Bay.

On February 10th at 1 PM we will be entertained in the clubhouse by a group of young Finnish singers. Please come out and support them. February 11th at 9 AM is the date and time for the Bill Lochton Memorial Tennis tournament. Bring your lawn chairs to the courts and help cheer the players on.

I am the host for the Valentine Potluck cocktail party February 14th. This event is free.  Bring your favorite hot or cold appetizer to share, and the beverage of your choice. We will supply paper products, drink glasses, soft drinks, dessert and coffee. The the party is from 5 PM to 7 PM so that you will still have time for a romantic dinner later. We’ll set everything up around the pool table, and weather permitting, have the party outside.

Eileen Meli and I are planning a fashion show at Chico’s in Manalapan for early March. It would be great to have an additional women’s event sometime this season. However, we need a volunteer, or volunteers, to organize a women’s luncheon or a day out somewhere.

Thanks to the photographic talents of Joan Maloney, there are now pictures posted in the clubhouse breezeway of members of the Master Assoication Board and the Social Committee. If you’d like assistance with Master Board or Social Committee issues please contact one of the representatives of either group.

A resident has requested  to place a business advertisement in the MOONBEAMS. Let me begin by stating that this newsletter will never endorse any business. It is a general information only newsletter.  Additionally, one should check with the respective association board to see if permission is required before starting or running any business on the property.

Some people have been using towels or notes to reserve poolside chairs and chaises. This is unfair to other residents and guests who want to briefly visit the area and can’t find a place to sit. Rules posted at the pool entrance specifically prohibit reserving or saving chairs or chaises unless one is physically present in the pool area.

With all the snow and cold weather up north, I’m very thankful to be here. Because of our great weather many of us have guests. During these busy times please ensure that you and your guests are courteous to your neighbors and respect condo rules.

Please come to any or all of our events. We look forward to seeing you. Have a good month.  Please keep us posted about special events happening in the community.
